Welcome to the Winfield Recreation Commission Website!
Superintendent, Scott Schoon is retiring
after 28yrs of service with the WRC!
It’s been an honor to serve as Superintendent of the Winfield Recreation Commission for the past 28 years. The purpose of this letter is to publicly inform you of my retirement from this position effective December 15, 2016.
I truly believe that sometimes it’s best to make a change when things are going well. Together, as a commission and as a community, we have made tremendous progress. All sixteen commissioners who I have had the privilege of working for gave me the support and direction needed to enhance the quality of life in Winfield.
From the number of programs to additional facilities, there are so many more opportunities for the community to benefit from. Prior to the City’s acquisition of the St. John’s College campus in 1988, the WRC had only limited facilities to program from. By converting one of their buildings into a recreation center, there has been tremendous growth. The WRC now offers 114 programs and classes including 19 special events throughout the year. The development and expansion of the Winfield Fitness Center has also been a great achievement with over 1200 members currently taking advantage of this workout area. The WRC is in a strong position financially to continue its mission in providing even more activities and better facilities in the future.
The Recreation Commission has been very fortunate to have a great working relationship with the City of Winfield, USD #465, and Southwestern College. This spirit of cooperation has led to outstanding recreational facilities for the people of Winfield to enjoy.
The employees at the WRC have been wonderful to work with. They have understood and carry out our goal of meeting the public demand for providing quality service and programs. It has been my pleasure to serve with these fine people.
Winfield has been a tremendous community to both my wife and our three children. It’s been a great place to raise a family and educate our kids. I hope in some small way we have been able to contribute to what makes Winfield a great place to live, work and play.
